Rep. Sims Urges Congress to Fund Gun Violence Prevention Research

"With the amount of gun violence taking place in our communities their shouldn't be any reason why we're not trying combat it on every level of government" - Rep. Sims.

Rep. Sims' resolution, HR 1349 was adopted November 16, 2016. The resolution urges the members of the 114th Congress to appropriate funding to allow the CDC to recognize and study gun violence as a public health crisis. Since 1996, the United States Congress has block funding to the "...CDC to sponsor or conduct research into causes of gun violence and strategies to prevent it."

The American Medical Association(AMA) - the largest association of medical professional - recognizes "uncontrolled ownership and
use of firearms, especially handguns, is a serious threat to
the public's health, inasmuch as the weapons are one of the
main causes of intentional and unintentional injuries and deaths." Sims commends the AMA for recognizing how important this is - " I sincerely thank the AMA, along with the American College of Physicians and the American College of Surgeons in recognizing that gun violence is a public health crisis and I encourage those that serve on the federal level in Congress will so the same."
