Sims Urges Governor to Continue Negotiations and Work to Pass a Budget

SPRINGFIELD, Ill – State Rep. Elgie Sims released the following statement after the General Assembly adjourned Wednesday:

“Our state has gone two years without a budget and I am urging the governor to return to the table so we can continue negotiating the full budget the people of Illinois need.”

“House Democrats have worked to meet the governor half way: The governor has talked about a property tax freeze, and we went further and voted to cut property taxes for all homeowners. The governor has talked about making Illinois a more competitive place for business, and again we have gone further by passing real reforms that cut taxes and fees on small businesses, investing in businesses that invest in Illinois and helping working families keep more of their hard-earned money.”

“ut the governor still refuses to negotiate a budget. His only goal is to pad profits for big corporations and further enrich billionaire CEOs. It is time to stop playing political games, because families are hurting, human service providers are closing their doors, and our schools are on the brink of shutting down. Our most vulnerable are suffering because programs like Meals on Wheels are not being funded and domestic violence centers are closing.” “We stand ready to negotiate a budget with overnor Rauner. n behalf of the people I represent, I urge the governor to return to the negotiating table and end the budget impasse with an honest balanced budget.”
