Sims Chief Co-Sponsor of Legislation Aimed at Improving Re-Entry Success for Ex-Offenders

On December 15, 2016 SB 3368 was signed into law. This bill amends the Illinois Identification Card Act and "Provides that for those who apply for a standard Illinois Identification Card upon release as a committed person on parole, mandatory supervised release, aftercare release, final discharge, or pardon from the Department of Corrections or Department of Juvenile Justice, the Secretary of State shall issue a standard Illinois Identification Card at the time of release..."

After being approved by the Senate, the bill was assigned to the Judiciary-Criminal Committee of which Rep. Sims sits as chairman. Sims notes, "As we continue to work towards moving our state in the right direction it is imperative that we not neglect those individuals whom need us the most. Ex-offenders have served their time and now have a second chance. With this type of legislation we move a step closer in helping ex-offenders enter back into society and play productive roles as contributing members of the community."
