Legislative Update: Budget Impasse

Tonight the Illinois General Assembly adjourned, without passing a full budget for the fiscal year scheduled to end June 30 or the one scheduled to begin July 1, 2016.

I am as frustrated as my constituents that some choose to continue to place a political agenda above the very real needs of the people we represent, however, our work is not done. Never before in the history of our state have we gone this long without a budget and we must take action to restore stability for those who rely on the state to meet our most basic obligations.

The fact is that the state of Illinois must pass a budget NOW!!! But this budget cannot be predicated on a political agenda, it must be based on protecting the quality of the education we provide our children, the social safety net of our most vulnerable populations and the services they depend on.

Our work remains undone, and I am prepared to be in the Capitol for as long as necessary to finish our work and support measures that protect middle-class families and the most vulnerable of our communities. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues and the Governor to come up with a resolution that is in the best interest of all citizens of the state of Illinois. - State Representative Elgie R. Sims, Jr.
