Sims to Host Health and Fitness Back-to-School Fair

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Elgie Sims Jr., D-Chicago, is inviting residents to a Health and Fitness Back-to-School Fair on Saturday, July 25 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at South Central Community Services located at 1021 E. 83rd St. in Chicago to continue his effort to increase the health of residents and help young people get active as summer begins.

“Too many residents in our communities do not have access to the quality healthcare they deserve, and too often their children don’t have the resources to live an active lifestyle,” Sims said. “This event will combine the resources that so many families need with an opportunity to get active.”

Sims is co-hosting the event with state Sen. Donne Trotter, state Rep. Marcus Evans, Jr. and Cook County Commissioner Stanley Moore. The event will feature free wellness services including breast cancer and mental health information, haircuts, screenings for HIV and high-blood-pressure, immunizations provided by the City of Chicago Care Van. Additionally, the Illinois Secretary of State’s office will be on hand to renew old driver’s licenses. Representatives from the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County (CEDA) will be available to help community members find out if they are eligible for the Home Weatherization Program. A bouncy house, volleyball, Zumba, line dancing and basketball games will also take place to encourage fitness and an active lifestyle.

“The health and wellness of my constituents is a major priority, and I hope community members join me for this event to provide the resources so many desperately need and partake in an active lifestyle,” Sims said. “I appreciate the collaboration of so many leaders and groups to be able to offer all these resources in one event.”

This event is free and open to the public. In addition to services outlined above, food, entertainment and free school supplies will be available. For questions about this event, please contact Sims’ full-time constituent service office at 773-783-8800.
