Emergency Housing Assistance Program (formerly EHAP)


The City of Chicago's Emergency Housing Assistance Program has two (2) special programs available to assist with emergency home repairs. The Emergency Heating Repair Program and the Roof and Porch Repair Program help homeowners make improve-ments to their homes.

Applicants can qualify by having: Eligible properties located in Chicago, habitable, owner-occupied, and not at risk of foreclosure. All applicants must be income eligible and can only receive a one-time service for roof and porch repair / replacement. Excep-tion to the one-time assistance policy may be granted to homeowners who face heating emergencies even though they already have received roof or porch assistance.

Emergency Heating Repair Program

This program is administered by the Dept. of Housing and Economic Development (HED) and provides grants for the repair or replacement of faulty or inoperable residential heating systems.

Open enrollment for this program runs now through April 1, 2014. To get info, initiate the application process, and determine eligibility, homeowners can call HED's customer service line at 312.744.3653, or visit City Hall, 121 N. LaSalle St., Room 1006, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday thru Friday.

Roof and Porch Repair Program
1. Open enrollment for the 2014 Roof and Porch Repair program starts at 9 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 2. To initiate the application process, homeowners are required to call 311 only to be placed on the intake list. Registration will be taken until 1,000 calls have been reached. 2. Hazardous and Dangerous Roof or Porch Repair/Replacement for Households Facing Imminent Threats to Health and Safety are available year round or until funds are exhausted.
